Manchester Games 2009

Manchester Games was held last Saturday. Yes, another late entry. I am quite busy with preparing my literature review. uhh.

Permainan diadakan di 3 tempat. Yg utamanya di Sugden Sports Centre (just next to Grosvenor Place, my accomodation). Di situ ada badminton, netball, basketball, and squash (tak tgk). Bola main di powerleague (tak pegi). Tennis main di Sportscity (tak pegi) which is located near Manchester City stadium. There is also a food fair at student union MMU (Manc Metropolitan Uni). Participants games ni adalah mungkin dari persatuan Brunei, Indonesian, Malaysian and Chinese. Maybe more but don't know exactly.

I was a good day I guess. Did not wake up early enough to go to the opening ceremony. I managed to get Adrian (flatmate Malaysian) utk teman ke city. After city, balik ke food fair beli la makanan2. Kemudian tgk basketball and the good day ends, because there was a fight.

The fight was between a malay team and a chinese china team. It prestart with an aggressive opponent. Then start with a reply of aggressiveness. A shove back. A f**k off emotional shout out. Then a group of people kicking the ass off this malay guy. I saw first hand. The strange thing is that the side audience came into the court to kick his ass not just only the opponent players. Sickening to see this kind of lack sportsmenship. I won't mention the guy's name but poor him, he got kicked and trashed to outside the building via the fire exit. He got a cut at the face. He even mentioned feeling a shoe at the face. The opponent team kind of appologised to him (the apology seem unsincere), and both teams were kind of disqualified.

Atas adalah roti canai hand made (it is what it said at the gerai). Daku beli nasi lemak, cekodok and roti canai. Itu aje because masa tu dah byk dah habis. Besides, takde pun cravings. Nasi lemak sedap dgn ayam2 goreng yg byk and free. yeah2. Roti canai best and kuah nya pun surprisingly sedap. Tak tau ape tapi mcam kuah ikan bilis. Sedap makan roti canai utk breakfast Ahad pagi.

More:
- I want to join the MSSM (malaysian student society of manchester)
- dah jumpa kedai jual tennis shoes, akan beli kemudian
- akan beli juga ping pong bats and balls to play
- bersemangat utk start main balik tennis, unfortunately my physical strength skg ni is very poor. uhuh

Another side to hear

There was a talk about Palestine last Thursday. I went and was supposed to write about it. Now a few days have passed and I am trying to make sense of what I heard that day. Should have written about this on that day.

I was an interesting talk. title: "Palestine: Past and Present". An Israeli historian was giving this talk. I am not quite sure of who organised this event, but I believed the Action Palestine may have some part because there were some of them giving some speech.

The lecture theatre was quite full. Many attended the event.

Trying to summarise, or rather points on what Ilan Pappe talked about that day:
- He tried to simplify his talk to 3 major struggle that the Palestinians have to go through since 1948.
- The Israelis action towards the Palestinian land must be called colonisation, occupation or such, without any doubt.
- Israel was and is still conducting ethnic cleansing on their effort to conquer the Palestinian land.
- He mentioned that Israel tries very hard to create a shield of complexity upon the situation that they are involved in their evil ways. eg: We rocketed or destroyed the mosque and schools because... well it is very complex... so just leave it to us to handle the situation of these terrorists. The situation is not complex, it is just pure evil.
- He also mentioned that people of the world should not be afriad of engaging the Israels. They will bring up frabications upon fabrications. At a point, the truth will of course emerge because of all the fabrications.

There was a lot more he talked about, but of course, I can only understand and remember a few points. There was a lot of questions and points from the audience too. Ilan Pappe clarified a few things:

- He believes that Israel is wrong and that there are ways to solve their problem. Learn from history, there are many examples of countries that have resolve quite similar problems (Malaysia maybe?we are very culturally diverse.heh). The problem is that on the Israel side, they do not want to venture into this way because they have a lot to gain otherwise. On the Palestinian side, there is also a lack of community leaders that could represent the whole nation.
- He believes that the zionism from early years have evolved into something different. Ideologies may hold the same name but the essence of it changes through time and situation. Zionism back then is not the same of what it has become now.
- He mentioned that there are quite a number of young Israeli do not want to get themseves involved in this war. They do not want to give service to the millitary. They are willing to venture other options.
- He does not condemn Judaism. I don't know what is his situation on religion but I personally want to think him as a secular jew.huhu.
- He is a true academia. He is always going for the truth. I was told he was actually expelled from the university he work in Israel because of his believes.

This is the poster of that event. Ilan Pappe. He had written a book titled: The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine (2006). I was told that it was a good book.

Below is a pamplet that was given to the audience. Info on the pamplet can be read here. There are also other facts and information on the Palestine struggle.

Amiin.

The last person on the list

This will not make sense.
Here the story goes...

Know that I and D came to the institute
Even not knowing before they met
Coming together should make them good friends
Emotions did not go wild, well, most of times
Why not be a team? It could be beneficial
Answer is no, because of... I actually don't know

End of first year, all got accustom
Late for class or not come at all
You make the call, should have chose wisely
And friends should also advise on timely
Too late, too late, good communication is lost
In mind, I thought D could survive

Do make it to class and assignments I say
And do not disappoint your lab mates that way
Please see a mirror to evaluate your place
After that you should make it in grace
This may also give a bad image that you embrace

To what extent that I have tried
Have to respect boundaries and such
In other friends I tried to say
Regarding D, to find a solution to see
Done on that, I gave up, sadly to say

Closing in the end of that journey
Losing or winning, can always be hopeful
Alas, the list has come up
Sitting at the bottom a name know much
Sorry my dear, you made it such

end of story

Moral of the story:
- study hard and smart
- do not take things easy
- make an effort because things will get hard

Gambar hiasan: En Zahir sedang tekun study utk exam aritu. btw, all the best kepada mereka2 yg akan dapat result minggu depan.

P/S: Maybe a few people can understand and relate this story. Easy coded message.

I want to boycott

Always have thought about it. Daku mmg mahu boycott Israel. Anda juga mahu, kan?

This is a good website with information on boycotting Israel:
Innovative Minds/boycott Israel

Above is the gathering of brands that are found directly funding Israel. Please click on it to enlarge or here. Is is worth the while for us to just have a look. We may not be able to remember all of them but insyaAllah, at some point, when we are buying a product, we may remember this poster and think twice or more on buying the brand.

Barcode reading, should try it. Don't just look at the ingredient mates!
Check the first 3 digits from the LEFT.
729 - Israel, eg 729 3453459070 (from inminds)

Some say that these other barcodes should be boycott. But depends...
570 - 579 Denmark
870 - 879 Netherlands
300 - 379 France
700 - 709 Norway

I have to also learn to multitask for my PhD. Tiga perkara utama right now: baca and start writing literature review; buat lab work for the strains from Lee; and start reading and designing the longitudinal experiment for udara exposed PU.

Tadi baru je joint meeting with Geoff and his phd students. Dah dapat tau ape yg org lain buat and made me realised that I really am under par right now. Need to get myself up to par! semangat2!

More and more:

Also tadi ada talk pasal Palestine: Past and Present. Will post about it later insyaAllah.

That is why, bila something bad had happened, orang kata "Nak buat camne, malang tidak berbau".

Okay. But I think phrase ini tiada gunanya and tiada makna. I respectfully think so.

Don't you agree?

Of course, exception kepada org yg bercinta. Angin kentut yg berbau sesama kekasih mungkin bukan malang utk mereka. that is what they say. I don't know. hehe.

Sambutan CNY di Manchester

Tahun kerbau. Well2, and so I know. Daku dibawa sana oleh Hafidz. Terima kasih kepada beliau.

Terdapat lion dance yg agak menarik. Daku juga mendapat tahu (dari menonton anime.ehem..) bahawa jikalau lion itu menggigit anda, anda akan diberi nasib yg baik. oke~. please refer to a real CNY celebrator about this. daku takleh tlg confirmkan. maaf.

Makanan2 dihidang. Malaysian food. Got to mingle with the undergrads. A lot of names. And of course, I will forget them. No matter how hard I try. uhuh.

Daku beli hand blender. See below.

Mahal blender ni. Daku tak try lagi. Nanti nak blend macam2. muahaha. say bye2 to cuts.

Later on that night (actually just now). Bermain lah pula pool and foosball dgn the 1st years. Hafidz, Faiz, Afif, Khalis, Khairun and Firdausi. It was good fun.

And tomorrow, I need to go to city to get some stuff. best2 yeah!

Experience the theater and Demo for Palestine

I went to the Palace Theater on Wednesday with the good company of Chaq, Farah and Wani. We went to experience the theater. We went to see Mary Poppins. I can honestly say that it was absolutely fantastic. Love the performances throughout the show which took around 2 hours.

This was my first time experiencing a British theater. It was great and I am certainly going to the theater again! Deep inside, I do feel really guilty of going to this Mary Poppins show. It is actually a performance from Disney and we must boicott them. I felt bad so even though I enjoyed it, I would not recommend anyone to go. It is the least I can do...lebih kurang.

On other news... just along the Oxford Road, the Action Palestine is taking action!

These people are taking action against the MancUni VC. You can read about it here. They are literally occupying the John Owens building to show their seriousness. They even plan to stay for 3weeks (like the war on Gaza) until their demands are met. I went to the peaceful demo outside the building to show my support. I have the highest respect for the people who organizes these serious events. Mind you, not only Muslims attend this event. Respect.

Besides me, the Malaysians that were at the peaceful demo was Pyan, Zaid, Alwi, Dzul, Afif, Khalis, Faiz, Anas, Faizal and 4 sisters. There are of course some more that I did not meet. Thanks to Pyan by the way for telling me about it.

Above picture is my work desk at Michael Smith Building. It is at the end of the C and D wing corridor. I find it to be a good place since there are not a lot of people around. However, I do need to get use to the people walking along at the side. The D wing people will pass there to go out of the building, C wing people will pass there to go to the boiler area, and everyone will pass there to go to their lockers. It is distracting but I do love the space that I have. Of course, that space will be gone if more people come to study at the faculty.

Okay now. That is that. Tomorrow is meeting with Geoff and Pauline.

Show and tell pictures

Above is my monopoly game set that I love so much. Love monopoly. The picture was taken when I was playing the game with my siblings. Great fun. I actually bought the monopoly credit card all the way from US. I sucks though because I forgot to that the monopoly set that we had was in pound currency and not in dollars. Solution - get another monopoly set that uses US dollar currency! haha. I'll get it later...

Above is just me hanging around at pantai Port Dickson. Prove - watch the toes. hehe. I was trying to conquer my fear of swimming in the sea. I did not go far into the sea, just around 30m from my bag. I was alone. Nobody should try to conquer a fear alone. uhh. I was in PD to get my dad at his conference at Coral Resort - next to Mayangsari Resort where Maryam got married the other day, last week of the date picture taken.

The e-ticket to go to UK. I actually forgot to bring this paper to the airport on the day of flight. Stupid2. Apologies again to my family for all the trouble. The flight was great. Little to no complaints. Cabin not full - nobody is sitting between me and an indonesian woman. Got to sit near window. No need to pray on board because arrived just nice into fajr. No long queues especially since I misplaced my medical exam and I had to get x-rayed at the airport. huhu.

Left: One of the main buildings part of the University of Manchester.
Right: Fog. There was a fog the other day. Visibility 400-500m. It was also cold.

Me and Acap. Just walking around Manchester city. Arndale is the main shopping building in the city. I think. Have not explored the whole city.

This is the view from my window. Top floor. No real view. Yup, it kind of sucks. But I can take it. Contract is from 25th Jan to 12th Sept 2009. Hopefully I can get a good place for next year. InsyaAllah.

My view with snow! Love snow. Hate the cold. Heater in room is in full blast. It is still snowing now. And probably tomorrow too. Subhanallah.

Okay. Now, back to reading setakat mana yg mampu.
